Polyp and Cancer Tissue Pathology and Acquisition

Data Collection

Polyp Tissue Pathology Entry Form

For the polyp patient pathology data web-form, we simplify the pathology result by selecting the most advanced histology: adenonocarcinoma, villous, tubulovillous, high-grade dysphasia tubular adenoma, hyperplastic polyp, or unknown. With respect to the polyp size - these should be taken from the procedure report and not the pathology report. This is because in general, physicians biopsy only a fraction of a large polyp or a polyp may break into fragment before it reaches the pathologist, etc.IUSCC places each polyp in a single vial for analysis, thus there is a one-to-one correspondence between polyps and vials.
For more information regarding polyp terminology, see Glossary of Polyp Terminology.

Cancer Tissue Information Entry Form

Information is collected for colon or rectal cancer patients, for all stages. Tissues can be normal or cancer, and tissue blocks may be frozen, flash-frozen paraffin embedded, ore both. Data for cancer patient tissue includes the biopsy type and RNA compliance.

Polyp Tissue Tracking

The tissue from poly patients is snap-frozen and transferred to MD Andersen Cancer Center for analysis.

Cancer Tissue Tracking

Frozen and Flash Frozen Paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues from cancer patients (both normal and cancer) are stored in the Tissue Procurement Biorepository. Slides from the FFPE tissue will be transferred to MD Andersen, remaining tissue is stored in the genomics core at IUSCC.
